The story behind Pen Connection

Renee & Jersey (Michael Barber)
Some stories aren't planned — they unfold over years, through loyalty, growth, mistakes, second chances, and love.
Our story began long before this platform ever existed.
I met Michael Barber — known to most as "Jersey" — years ago. Life took us down different roads, but we always stayed connected. When he went to prison, I didn't disappear. I checked in periodically. I wrote. I made sure he wasn't forgotten. And over the years, I helped connect him with pen pals — people who were willing to offer something simple yet powerful: conversation.
What started as support became a pattern.
I saw firsthand what consistent communication does for someone behind the walls. A letter can shift someone's mindset. A message can interrupt isolation. A conversation can remind a person they are still human.
When Michael was released, he came to work where I was. We had both grown. We had both been shaped by life. Somewhere between rebuilding and rediscovering who we were, friendship deepened into something neither of us expected — we fell in love.
Life, however, is not always linear.
Today, he is back inside. And I have recently regained my own freedom. But through every chapter — incarceration, release, rebuilding, separation — one thing remained constant:
Connection matters.
This platform was built from lived experience. Not theory. Not curiosity. Reality.
We understand the loneliness that comes with incarceration. We understand how powerful it is to know someone on the outside still cares enough to write. We understand the impact a simple pen pal can have on mental health, hope, and rehabilitation.
This is not just a website.
It is a bridge.
- A bridge between isolation and connection.
- Between stigma and understanding.
- Between past mistakes and future possibilities.
Our mission is simple:
To make sure no one feels forgotten.
Because we've lived it.
And we know the difference one person can make.
